The Miss Denim and Diamonds pageant is returning to Denim Days Sunday, Sept. 25 at Erwin Elementary School. “ The mission is to promote Erwin’s unique heritage, to inspire this generation to be as passionate about Erwin as past generations and to provide a way to boost these girls’ self esteem in the unique individuals that they are,” Erwin Area Chamber of Commerce Administrator and Miss Denim and Diamonds Pageant Coordinator Abby Barefoot said. The last Miss Denim pageant was held in 2000, the last Miss Erwin crowned February 2007.
The Jaycees first supported the Miss Erwin pageant in the late ’50s and early ’60s. The pageant ceased to exist in the late ’60s and early ’70s. The last person to wear the crown was Sheila Lee, holding the title for nine years. She went on to be executive director of the Miss North Carolina pageant. “ In the late ’70s there was a MIss Denim and that was based purely on the denim outfit. The mill donated the denim and they made an outfit of their choice,” Chief Field Director of the Miss North Carolina Pageant Committee Phyllis Dunn said.
“In 1982, when they had the first Miss Erwin-Denim pageant, the competitor went on to compete in Miss North Carolina,” Mrs. Dunn said. “These pageants were held at Triton High School.”
The pageant ran from 1982 until 2007 but with the closing of Erwin’s mill in 2000, the See Pageant, Page 3 Pageant

name was changed from Miss Erwin- Denim to Miss Erwin-Harnett County.
Miss Denim and Diamonds will be held in addition to the Baby Denim contest and registration fees are $45.
The $45 registration fee covers entry into the denim and gown contests and winners will ride in the Denim Days and Christmas parades.
The winner in the 15 to 18-year-old age group is eligible for a scholarship.
Ms. Barefoot, along with Assistant Coordinator Janice Godwin, have coordinated with local businesses for contestant incentives.
“It is about getting local businesses involved,” the chairperson said.
A “Swag Bag” and Janice’s Fabulous Feet choreography lessons are included with registration.
“This is just a start,” Mrs. Barefoot said. “We hope to grow the pageant.”
There will be multiple age divisions, from infant to 18 years old, and the choreography lessons will be centered around an opening number to be performed 2 p.m., Sept. 25.
Miss Denim and Diamonds contestants and staff will meet twice before registration. The first meeting will be Sunday where contestants will learn opening number choreography from Ms. Godwin of Janice’s Fabulous Feet. “They need to come to the meeting Sept. 11,” Mrs. Barefoot said. “It is an informational meeting for parents and participants and a place to learn opening number choreography.”
The meeting will be at Janice’s Fabulous Feet located at 101 Hunt Driver, Dunn, at 1 p.m.
All participants will be given the opportunity to perform in the dance routine and connect with past pageant winners.
Board expectations and a question about the Town of Erwin will be shared Sunday. A date for dance rehearsal will also be scheduled.
