Much ado about denim - Lebanon Daily Record

Several reports have poured out detailing how we’re all washing our jeans incorrectly and far too often.

The CEO of Levi Strauss is currently toting pocketfuls of advice that jeans should seldom be machine-washed, and rather spot cleaned when necessary with a toothbrush and the slightest bit of detergent.

This spin on his spin cycle conviction stems from his two theories; that going sans machine wash is both better for the environment and better for your denim.

This mentality’s nothing new. A year ago, fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger made denim waves when he boasted that he never in fact washes his jeans, in order to help them last longer.

In 2014, CNN reported that generally, jeans should be washed every four to five wears, because over-washing causes them to wear and fade. The report advocates for turning one’s jeans inside out, washing in cold water, followed by a drip dry.

And according to John Tesh’s ‘Intelligence for your life’ program, a top microbiologist says there are just no studied health risks with wearing your favorite pair multiple times without washing them, and he again reinforces that jeans should be cleaned only occasionally, and by hand.

These verdicts may all point to a spot cleaned stitch in time saving nine unnecessary machine washes, but I’m wary.

In our exceedingly germophobic world in which Clorox wipes and Purell hand sanitizer rule the day, these patches of tidbits come as a surprise.

And so my husband and I have concluded that Tommy Hilfiger, John Tesh, and the Levi CEO obviously have one thing in common: They definitely don’t have toddlers.
