Daily Crush: Repurposed Vintage Denim by The Series - Out Magazine

Meet Ella Wiznia, the NYC-based designer and creator of The Series, a brand that specializes in repurposing old denim into fresh, groovy statement pieces. Wiznia's embroidered jackets with everything from Britney's Circus album cover to horoscope patches to Rugrats to Pokemon.

"The first jacket I made was for myself, just because I wanted one. Whenever I would wear it people would ask me where I got it and I soon was getting custom commissions," Wiznie tells Out.

"I love puzzles and word games and puns and putting things together, that’s just how my brain works, and so naturally took to collage starting at a young age. The more I worked with denim as a canvas, the more I began exploring and experimenting with different materials."

We're particularly obsessed with the Nostalgia collection, which elegantly explores '90s and early '00's pastiche.

"I started mainly with vintage patches and fabrics. I then learned how to embroider. While I was looking for vintage jean jackets, I would always come across a lot of vintage shirts with amazing graphics, so decided to see how I could incorporate those into my designs."

Each piece designed by the Series is handmade with materials picked from vintage finds around New York City. In addition to her signature pieces, Wiznia also takes custom orders. Anything from a Fame Monster embroidery to the Breakfast at Tiffany's poster, if you can imagine it, you can have it (for anywhere between $150-$180).

"Even though each of the designs are super wearable, I like to think of them each as movable collages that go on adventures everyday," Wiznia muses. "They are all one of a kind and my process and motivation changes with each piece."
