Emily Ratajkowski, the New Face of DL1961, Loves Vintage Denim and Hates Tight Jeans - Vogue.com

Emily Ratajkowski has had a lot on her plate recently. Only a few weeks ago, the model-actress released her bag collaboration with The Kooples—the perfect carryall for those who love to go sans wallet—and today, she was named the face of denim label DL1961. (The New York–based jean company, known for its jumpsuits and easygoing styles, is a favorite of Gigi Hadid’s). Though Ratajkowski’s foray into jeans seems natural—she estimates she owns about 100 pairs—the move does represent a shakeup to her mostly vintage denim collection. “In general, I’m really inclined to wear vintage stuff. You see me in different brands that aren’t even recognizable because they are older,” says Ratajkowski over the phone. “I really love DL1961 because I am picky when it comes to new jeans. I feel like a lot of the time, the new washes are trying to look vintage and it doesn’t exactly translate. These jeans don’t have those cheesy washes and they are extremely stretchy, so it’s a perfect middle ground.”

Ratajkowski admits she’s had a few missteps in the past when it comes to denim dressing. “There was a period in high school when I was into ’90s and late ’80s looks like floral dresses, thigh-high socks, lace-up booties—a very indie-girl vibe,” she says. “I had this really intense acid wash jacket—like, Can you even wear this?—and I wore it with acid wash jeans. It was a very ’80s double mistake, but I think I figured it out quickly that it wasn’t the right vibe. There’s definitely a limit.”

As for how her jean style is evolving, Ratajkowski has become something of a jumpsuit convert. “There is a grey moto jumpsuit [from DL1961] and I love a jumpsuit because you just throw it on and go out in the world. It’s like a Wonder Woman outfit,” she says. But no matter what denim style Ratajkowski chooses—vintage or new—there is one rule she abides by: comfort comes first. “Wearing jeans too tight just looks a little crazy and there is no way that is comfortable,” she says. “It’s like you can’t feel the blood in your legs.” Let’s see what the bombshell steps out in next.
