Seriously taken with denim — the top-to-toe kind — designers advanced the look for spring with eye-catching, if occasionally oddball, variations on this all-purpose staple.

If the newest interpretations tend to echo earlier versions on the runways at Chloé and Calvin Klein, so what. No one this week seems in a rush to lay allover denim to rest, not while it offers a reliable canvas for quirky experimentation.
Twists on this seemingly populist theme varied from the upmarket ensembles shown by Tom Ford, all extended shoulders and hip-slung pants, to the rancho deluxe get-ups at Calvin Klein, spliced with shiny patent panels; or the natty three-piece suits on parade at Rachel Zoe.
In his R13 collection, Chris Leba offered a funkier take, showing repurposed denim in the shape of a dress or faded overalls, with slouchy boots to match.
Is this trend nothing more than another rote nod to the 1990s? A droll homage to the unsettling all-American landscape of “Badlands” or “Twin Peaks?” Or just a friendly, and eminently practical, approach to the rigors of day-to-day dressing?
A little of each, so it seems.
