Even Kaia Gerber Gets the Denim "Line" - Elle - ELLE.com

Kaia Gerber is busy.

"I have a ton of homework," sighs the 16-year-old. "I mean, I'm a junior in high school—we all have the most homework."

But Gerber also has two million Instagram followers, a models.com archive that's seven pages deep, Cindy Crawford's genes, and―as of this week―the new ad campaign for Hudson Jeans. Which makes us wonder...

Is she really that smiley in real life? Is she still in love with the fashion world? Is she ready for a nap?

The answer, we learn in this interview, is "yes" to all three...

It's October, but it's still 80 degrees outside. What's your advice for hot weather denim?

Oh, I grew up in Malibu, so I feel like unless it was a heat wave, I was wearing denim all the time anyway. Now I always wear these Barbara jeans. They’re definitely my signature piece; I don't even have to think about it, I just grab them and put them on with anything. When it’s hot I wear them anyway. Crop tops or a lighter top when it’s hot out. A sweater the rest of the time. It's just easier to find a favorite pair of jeans and make them work all the time.

Does that include when you travel? I've gotten into passionate discussions about denim (or not) on planes...

I get it. The worst thing for me is an uncomfortable jean, especially when you’re traveling. The good thing about Hudson is that they have stretch, which is so important for me, because I can wear these jeans on planes without getting “the line."

Ohhh, the line that tight jeans give your skin sometimes?

Yeah, exactly! "The line” is not something that anyone wants. Hudson helps me avoid it, thank god.

When I was in high school, I used to draw all over my jeans in class. Are you big into DIY with yours?

I used to literally take scissors and add rips to my jeans. I thought they would look cool, but I would always go way too far and destroy them, and then I would never wear them.

And then you'd get in trouble...

Yeah, exactly, then I would get in trouble for ruining my jeans! So if you like that look, and you don’t want to waste a pair of jeans, I would just buy jeans with good rips in them already. I've learned my lesson. I trust the designer’s skills way more than my own.

You're really close with your family. Whose denim do you steal?

I steal big denim jackets from Presley sometimes. He won’t notice unless I say something, which is great. But if he goes looking for an item of clothing and it’s missing, at this point, he just knows I have it somewhere. That's the drawback!

You walked 18 shows this season—and it was your first season! What do you wish you'd known about fashion shows before you started?

I wish I’d known how important downtime was before and after work. But I came to learn, so now I'm starting to get it. I think when you’re so busy—it’s not always as crazy as it is during [runway season]—you really need to build time into your schedule to not be busy. I would try go back to my hotel alone and relax or nap and just take that time to breathe.

Is a runway walk different than a normal walk, or is that only true in Zoolander movies?

They’re not quite the same. I’d say my runway walk has a little bit “more” to it, like more movement, more of a rhythm. But whatever, as long as you’re walking with confidence, I say, walk however you want.

Have you caught yourself on auto-pilot, walking down the street like you're in a show?

I bet I have, but I hope not! [Laughing] Oh gosh, I really hope not. People would probably look at me like I was crazy.
