Detroit Denim gets tough love on CNBC's 'The Profit' | Crain's Detroit ... - Crain's Detroit Business

"The Profit" and its host Marcus Lemonis, chairman and CEO of Camping World Inc., criticize participating businesses with abandon. The show's website promo says that Detroit Denim's "jeans are stiff ... and so are the owners. One of them stamps out any idea that isn't his own, while another obsesses about the smallest of details."

"I'm a bit of snob about some of the things we do and how we do it, and a bit of a purist," Yelsma said of the company's handmade jeans that sell for $250 each. "But not all people enjoy jeans that way ... so I was able to open up the way we looked at it and the way we made jeans."

Being on the show led the business owners to create a new line of products made from vintage and thrift store pieces, he said.

Lemonis invests in struggling companies and those he thinks have potential for growth. Yelsma said they "did strike a partnership" with Lemonis, but could not provide specifics.

Detroit Denim made around $250,000 in sales in 2016 and is on track for $350,000 for 2017, Yelsma said. The apparel and accessories manufacturer sells at its Rivertown store, online, through custom ordering and a lesser amount through wholesale.
