Eighth annual 'Denim and Diamonds' fundraiser set for Nov. 17 - Hot Springs Sentinel

Our Promise Cancer Resources is gearing up for its eighth annual tailgate fundraiser, "Denim and Diamonds" at 6 p.m. Nov. 17.

The event will take place in Hall A of the Hot Springs Convention Center. Attendees will enjoy dinner by Turf Catering and a live auction by Wilson Auctioneers. The Arkansas Razorbacks will play Mississippi State that Saturday, and if the game is in the evening guests can watch at the event. The attire is casual. Tickets are $75 per person.

The Young Men of Distinction, a branch of Our Promise, will auction off themed gift baskets in a silent auction. Basket entries include hunting, spa and food packages. YMOD has promoted and fundraised for Our Promise through the contribution of over 400 service hours this year to the community. YMOD is a group of Garland County sophomores, juniors and seniors who are committed to serving their community and local cancer patients, a news release said.

Eleven boys will be pinned and scholarships will be distributed for their service at the Denim and Diamonds event. Lauray's -- The Diamond Center, donated the YMOD pins.

Debbie Key, mother of YMOD member Jace Robbins, said, "I'm so glad Jace wanted to be part of YMOD. YMOD has made a huge impact on Jace, especially since his Nana, Cathy Cantwell, has been battling stage IV colon cancer the past three years. Understanding the importance of helping others and giving back to the community with Our Promise Cancer Resources has encouraged Jace to be a better person." Robbins is a senior at Lake Hamilton.

Awards will also be given to community members for their work with Our Promise. Frances Iverson will receive the Karen Rutledge Survivor Award, and Dr. Brian Peters will receive the Our Promise Marge Mitchell Community Service Award.

Our Promise Cancer Resources helps cancer patients with gas cards, utility bills, prescription costs, and other financial needs. The mission of Our Promise is to provide caring professional support and education to cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers through direct financial assistance, social programs, and educational services, the release said.

A new resource, Our Promise Cancer Resource Center, will be completed in May and will lodge eight cancer patients during their treatments.

Ian Hollis, president of YMOD and three-year member, said, "I have enjoyed watching Our Promise grow over the last three years. I hope more guys will get involved with Our Promise. Giving back to my community has allowed me to grow as an individual in more ways than I could ever know."
