Denim & Diamonds: western hats and bling support museum - The Commercial Dispatch

August brings with it an event the Oktibbeha County Heritage Museum and friends look forward to each year -- Denim & Diamonds. The Golden Triangle is invited to channel inner cowboys or cowgirls -- and add some glitz -- on Saturday, Aug. 17 for the occasion. The museum benefit begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Starkville Country Club and includes a barbecue dinner and live music by the band Kannawermz.

"The past Denim & Diamonds have been very successful and a lot of fun for all who attend," said Stephen Cunetto, president of the Friends of the Museum.

Festivities support the mission of the museum, established in 2008 and located at 206 Fellowship St. in Starkville. It houses permanent and rotating exhibits that help tell the county's story.

Cunetto said, "We feel it is important to preserve and promote Oktibbeha County's rich heritage through the museum. It has a wide variety of exhibits that help chronicle Oktibbeha's history and showcase many of the wonderful people from our community who have made a lasting impact."

The museum is an all-volunteer effort, noted Friends member Joan Wilson.

"The Ava Moore Award will be given out that night," Wilson said. "It goes to someone who has gone above and beyond, either for the history of Starkville or for the benefit of the museum." Moore is a former president of the Friends of the Museum.

"At Denim & Diamonds there will be a delicious barbecue meal and music for dancing," said Wilson. "It's very casual, and that's what makes it fun. Just have a good time."

Cunetto added, "We're very excited about the upcoming Denim & Diamonds. ... We're also very pleased that this year's entertainment will be Kannawermz who play a wide variety of music from Johnny Cash, Elvis, Carl Perkins, Howlin' Wolf, Chuck Berry and many others. We hope people from the community come out to support the museum and enjoy an evening of fellowship."

The museum is open 1-4 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, and otherwise by appointment. Admission is free; donations are appreciated.
