VICTORIA, Texas - While visiting the South Texas Farm & Ranch Show, the Victoria County 4-H Ambassadors have provided a way for the community to get involved during the month of October.
Gayle Bludau, the Victoria County Family and Community Health Agent, said: "What we've seen is 12 million pounds of textiles are being thrown into the trash every year, and we're encouraging people to bring their denim and donate it, and we will keep it out of the landfills,".
During the South Texas Farm & Ranch Show, there's a small corner to donate your old denim items. The clothing will be sent to a special organization.
"There's a program called Blue Jeans Go Green program and so that's where we will be sending the jeans and all the other denim material," said Bludau.
The denim jeans are made from cotton a natural fiber that can be recycled into the insulation. The average American owns 10 pieces of denim and 6 pairs are jean items. A person who donated expressed his gratitude to everyone who has done their part to help the environment.
"I would just like to say that we appreciate everyone who's donated something denim to the program. I know I have put several pairs of my old jeans that had big holes in them in the donation can. The cause is getting smaller and this was a good way to make it bigger," said Victor Eder a Denim Donator.
If you couldn't make it out to the Victoria Community Center to donate your denim you can stop by the Victoria County Extension office located at 528 Waco Circle in Victoria.
