“Innovation and sustainability go hand in hand,” according to Sophie Schop, G-Star sustainability manager.
And at the Amazon Destination Denim event held Oct. 24-27 in Berlin, this was a major theme.
Schop, along with Elena Faleschini, Isko global field marketing manager; Tony Tonnaer, Kings of Indigo founder; and Roian Atwood, Wrangler’s senior director of global sustainable business, discussed the best practices of the entire denim supply chain on Sunday at a panel hosted and sponsored by the denim mill Isko.
Moderated by Keith O’Brian, Isko’s marketing and business development manager, “Designing denim for the future: A panel to tackle the industry’s improvement and best practices from field to shelf” highlighted the small decisions made throughout the supply chain that can have a positive effect on the environment.
One of the solutions discussed was Isko’s latest innovation, the R-TWO platform, which incorporates reused cotton and recycled polyester to create new fabric. The process lowers the use of raw materials and improves sourcing efficiency, as it recovers fabric from the production stage that would otherwise be considered waste.
The fabric is then put back into the spinning process to create reused cotton yarn that is fully traced by yarn supplier Sanko, providing total transparency into the field to fabric process. The reused cotton is then blended with the recycled polyester to create R-TWO fabrics.
Responsible production is built into Isko’s framework. It is the first mill to earn both the EU Ecolabel and Nordic Swan Ecolabel. The company has a production capacity of 300 million meters of fabric per year, and has offices in 35 countries.
Amazon Destination Denim was a four-day fashion festival that brought technology, music and culture to the denim shopping experience. Shoppers and fashion experts gathered at Berlin’s Kühlhaus for workshops, panels and demonstrations.
