Attention, Ellery Fans! Your Favorite Bell-Bottom Designer Is Now Doing Denim - Vogue.com

A bit of drama is par for the course in Ellery-land. As the brand behind the bell-sleeved tops that became a street style sensation—and inspired legions of imitators—and the similarly extreme-cut and unmissable trousers, Ellery has a history of making showstopping garments for daring dressers. So when we heard that designer Kym Ellery was setting her sights on denim with a capsule collection for MatchesFashion.com, we wondered: How would the woman behind some of the most editorial shapes on the runway take on something as mundane as jeans?

With similar artfulness, of course. “I began to realize that we should add a casual side to the collection that didn’t compromise on design and quality,” Ellery told Vogue.com in an email. “This denim collection really embodies the Ellery DNA and features both classic and voluminous silhouettes.”

Made of Japanese denim in a variety of washes, the collection keeps the look-at-me spirit of the Ellery woman while adding some casual touches—only where necessary. The staple silhouette is a high-rise take on Ellery’s über-flared pants, available in two lengths for wearing with or without heels. “I wanted the jeans to look effortless when worn but still very polished,” Ellery continued. “A variety of styles were designed to fit different body shapes so that each woman can find her perfect pair of jeans.” For those looking for a bit of wow factor but not the whole shebang, there is a slighter flare and a pair of boyfriend jeans with a touch of insouciant slouch.

But these jeans have more than their extreme silhouettes going for them: Each style comes with exposed button flies coated in gold. “I love a button fly; it reminds me of growing up in the ’90s,” Ellery said. “I wanted the hardware to bring in an element of luxury not usually seen on denim. I also wanted to make your ‘casual jeans’ still feel special as you wear them each day. For me, denim makes getting dressed easy, and hopefully now, with this collection, it will make being stylish easy as well.”

When it came time to buy, MatchesFashion.com’s buying director, Natalie Kingham, couldn’t resist. “Kym has done an amazing job translating her signature pant shapes in denim,” she said. “I personally particularly love the Ophelia high-rise flared jeans.” Chances are you’ll find them hard to resist, too.
