MUSTANG — Morgan Meyer, senior student officer of the Mustang High School chapter of Family Career and Community Leaders of America, is managing a community service project called Denim for Hope.
Meyer is collecting donations of old denim clothing, such as jeans and jackets, and is inviting the community to help.
Anyone can donate denim they no longer need from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in front of the HUB Mission Ministry, 201 N Trade Center Terrace, behind the Mustang McDonald's. The denim can be in any condition.
Meyer and other members of the chapter will recycle the denim into new products, such as curtains, rugs, coasters and oven mitts. The newly created products are donated to the HUB Mission Ministry in Mustang where they will be distributed to ministries and community service organizations for their established outreach and support programs.
Meyer came up with the idea for the project two years ago when she was volunteering with FCCLA at the HUB.
“I learned about the people who are struggling to get by every day, like the single mothers who use their last dime to feed their children or the homeless veteran on the street corner begging for change when all he has is the clothes on his back,” she said.
“I realized how many people in the community don't have the money to buy the simplest things like bars of soap, toilet paper and clean water.”
The HUB Mission Ministry's goal is to help those in need by providing necessities like food and clothing and also luxury items such as furniture and decorations for their homes.
“The luxury items help them feel good about themselves even when life is bringing them down,” Meyer said.
Desta Yeilding, FCCLA adviser, said Meyer is passionate about the organization. Every year she leads her fellow members in their volunteer efforts at the HUB.
Shannon Rigsby is communications officer for Mustang Public Schools.
