ARRINGTON: 6 Denim trends to try this spring - Daily Nebraskan

Straight off the New York Fashion Week runway and into The Daily Nebraskan come this season’s denim trends. As a denim fanatic, I was eager to scour the runways for patterns I noticed in denim, and found some trends continuing, some reinvented and some brand new. Read on for the latest and greatest in all things denim to prepare yourself for spring shopping.

1. Deconstructed

Deconstructed denim is nothing new to millennials. From grunge to Yeezy collections to distressed jogger pants, we’ve seen it all when it comes to deconstructed. Designer and big-name brands must work tirelessly to keep the style fresh, this season not excluded.

Deconstructed denim is anything from holes in the knees to completely tattered pants. However, this season’s runways decided to redefine what we call deconstructed. Some denim looks can be layering two washes in one pant, looking as if you’re wearing two pairs of jeans. I’ve seen others, off the runway, with seams on the outer side looking like you added in extra fabric or are wearing the pants inside out.

It’s an interesting look. Deconstructed denim has been in the fashion light for a while, though, so don’t knock it. Fun jeans can easily spruce up a plain look.

2. Dark wash

One thing I love about denim is the versatility. With the deconstructed look, you can mix washes. It keeps looks fresh and different. This season, the runways chose to strut the fashion-forward dark wash.

Dark denim has been a crowd favorite for as long as I can remember. It’s slimming, flattering and can make a regular outfit look a little more dressy when styled the right way. 2018 is the year of the dark denim, and I don’t think that will upset anyone.

3. Baggy

Remember when saggy pants were a problem in middle school? At my middle school, guys had to wear shoelaces as belts if their pants wouldn’t stay up. I suppose we’re coming full circle, because baggy jeans are back.

This is a denim trend not everyone will be on board with, and that’s OK. I’m sure we’ve all seen Instagram models sporting low-rise baggy jeans with Calvin Klein underwear peeking over top. The trend is similar to that.

The main piece that repeatedly hit the runway for baggy denim was denim sweatpants. Think really long, oversized sweatpants or joggers, made of denim. Though runway fashion functions more to portray trends than tell you what to wear on the street, I still don’t think I’ll be hopping on the denim sweatpants boat.

4. Cuffed

Cuffed jeans: A seemingly simple concept of rolling your jeans at the bottom when they’re too long or they hide your shoes. In 2018, however, cuffs are reinventing themselves and they are not playing it safe.

Have you ever seen a mom wear jeans that were cuffed too much at the bottom? It’s the kind of cuff that wants to be stylish but just missed the mark. Well, it’s the moms’ time to shine because big, bold cuffs are in.

These dramatic cuffs are making their way into the fashion world through bootcut and flare jeans. However, you’re just as likely to see other jeans rolled high into capri-length pants this season. Some pairs of denim are even designed to look like they have a cuff, but don’t actually.

5. Embroidered

This is my favorite trend of all the denim styles we’re discussing today. I’m not talking about roses and random embroidered patches. This embroidery trend goes hand in hand with ornate embellishment.

The embroidery goes directly on the denim or is mixed in with different fabrics. A fun look with this type of denim is the mix of denim and silk fabrics, as shown in this pair from Zara.

I was obsessed with embroidered booties when they were in style last fall, so it’s safe to say I’ll be digging this trend in the spring. It’s an easy way to make any outfit look a little more fashionable, in the comfort of a good pair of denim.

6. Mom jeans

The mom jean. A vintage denim style that has taken the world by storm in the past year or so. Honestly, I tried to avoid them at first. Still stuck in the skinny jean phase, I didn’t like the straight fit on the bottom of the pant.

However, this look is unavoidable. Mom jeans dominate fashion ads, influencers’ Instagram pages and seemingly every retail store. Eventually, I caved.

If you haven’t seen mom jeans, they’re typically high waisted, straight-fit pants that fit in all the right places, and there’s room to cuff them at the bottom with the straight legs. A double whammy for denim trends!

So there you have it, all the up and coming denim trends of this season. Whether you love or hate denim, you have to come to the consensus that it’s not going anywhere. Might as well look fashionable while wearing it.

Xoxo, Mikayla
