Some of the graduating seniors in San Jacinto County's two school districts will receive college scholarships thanks to the Area Go Texan Denim and Diamonds Banquet held on Feb. 10.

The Denim and Diamonds Banquet is an annual fundraiser hosted by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Go Texan committee that raises money for scholarships given to seniors outside of the Houston Metro area.

The committee raises more than $1 million for schools across multiple counties. Shepherd ISD and Coldspring-Oakhurst CISD are among dozens of school districts that receive scholarships.

The banquet, which was held this year in the newly opened Coldspring Community Shelter, raises an average of $50,000 with hundreds in attendance.

"We only sell 300 tickets to this," said Sue Nell Loggins of the Go Texan committee.

Visitors pay $100 per ticket, which gets them in the door and allows them to enjoy a steak dinner. From there, funds are raised through raffles and a live auction. Chance Ward acted as this year's auctioneer.

Many of the items in the auction included quilts, fryers, guns, paintings, various works of art and more.

One item, a framed Texas flag, was sold to Clay Jones for $1,400. Jones donated the item back and it was then sold to Eastex Title for $1,600.

Another item was purchased by Steve Roberts, who also donated the item back to be sold once again. The total was more than $2,500.

With the fundraiser over, students in both Shepherd High School and Coldspring-Oakhurst High School now have the opportunity to win scholarships. According to Loggins, the number of scholarships awarded varies depending on the number of students who apply with as few as eight given out in one year.

"Other years we might have 15 or 20," she said.

The number given out this year will not be known until April at the earliest. The scholarship also proves to be a big help for students as they prepare to take their first steps into college once they graduate.

"The largest amount that we've been given is $3,000," said Loggins.
