CARSON CITY, Nev. (KOLO) Plenty of professionals won’t be wearing their typical business attire April 25, 2018, opting for denim instead due to the good cause behind a national day.
Wednesday is National Denim Day. The movement is part of an international effort to increase awareness about sexual assault.
The history on the denim day movement stems from a 1999 incident in Italy; a girl was blamed for being sexually assaulted because she was wearing tight denim jeans.
The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament went to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim.
Since then, wearing jeans on denim day has become a symbol of protest against destructive attitudes about sexual assault.
"I'm encouraging all the employers to allow their employees to wear denim, just to send the message to increase awareness, to make sure everybody knows it's a big concern,” said Governor Brian Sandoval.
A recent National Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that 1 in 3 young people will experience dating abuse. It is due to statistics like these that Governor Sandoval is so passionate about the issue.
“Usually everyone dresses up like this to go to work, and when they are in denim, someone will ask them, why are you wearing denim? And it’s because I want to raise awareness associated with sexual assault and violence,” he said.
