ISU raises awareness of sexual assault through Denim Day | Local ... - KPVI News 6

Students across ISU wore denim and the color teal today to raise awareness of sexual assault.

Organizers say wearing denim symbolizes that you stand with sexual assault survivors.

Denim day originated from an Italy trial, when women legislators wore jeans to represent a victim whose rape conviction was overturned due to her wearing tight pants.

Today participants signed their names for the cause, and listened to speakers from several different organizations.

Stephanie Richardson, Assistant Director of the Gender Resource center "It's very encouraging to see all the people around wearing teal... It's very encouraging to know that there is a national campaign to bring awareness... It's just such an important aspect... It's not a woman's issue it's everyone's issue... So we all need to band together to make sure the statistics go down..."

The original denim day was in 1999.

ISU joined the program in 2015.
