There are plenty of shows, films, and concerts happening this weekend. Here’s some of what we recommend:
Fri 10/12: Toby Driver: "Few people in heavy music are as versatile or prolific as New York multi-instrumentalist and singer Toby Driver. With his exploratory bands Kayo Dot, Maudlin of the Well, and Vaura; his electro-goth group Piggy Black Cross; and his long list of other collaborative and solo projects, he’s consistently digging into new sounds and textures, sometimes engineering unlikely combinations of influences—avant-garde metal, jazz, postrock—even within a single track," writes the Reader's Jamie Ludwig. 8 PM, Cobra Lounge, 235 N. Fri 10/13 - Sun 10/14: A Star is Born: Catch a screening of the 2018 version of A Star is Born directed by Bradley Cooper and costarring Lady Gaga. The Reader's Noah Berlatsky writes, "In comparison to the '76 version, the film benefits from the fact that Cooper has a much greater range, both vocally and as an actor, than the mumbling, shambolic [Kris] Kristofferson. But the 2018 script is also sharper because it's more grounded in the dynamics of labor." See movies times here. Prices vary.
Fri 10/12 - Sun 10/14: Witch: "Director Marti Lyons's cast is compelling from top to bottom (Audrey Francis, as a deadpan, strong-willed Elizabeth, is a consistent scene stealer), and without spoiling anything, a shocking sequence fight-choreographed by Matt Hawkins is undoubtedly one of the richest, most visceral scenes to play out on a Chicago stage all year," writes the Reader's Dan Jakes. Fri 10/12 - Sun 10/14: Not for Sale: It's the last weekend to catch Not for Sale! UrbanTheatre Company and Sara Carranza present Guadalis Del Carmen’s play about gentrification in Humboldt Park. Using humor and empathy, Carranza "allows the audience to see where everyone is coming from rather than hammering home a single dogmatic point of view above all others," writes the Reader’s Dmitry Samarov. Sat 10/13 - Sun 10/14: Indigo Nation Denim Festival: Fashion enthusiasts will have the opportunity to work with local vendors and workshops to shop, design, deconstruct and learn more about denim at this festival. Sat-Sun 11 AM - 5 PM, Reunion Chicago, 2557 W. North Ave, indigonation.work, $10-$35.
Sun 10/14: KEN Mode: This Winnipeg trio "produce explosive, dirgey noise that swings, grinds, and drags along through walls of feedback and sax squonk," writes the Reader’s Luca Cimarusti, and master the art of creating something raw and powerful.
