April 24 of each year is designated as Denim Day. Through the efforts of HOPE, Inc. staff, Terri Flint and Kim Nicholson, county staff and others wear denim to raise awareness of sexual assault.
The history of Denim Day, as the website, www.denimdayinfo.org, reports, became a movement after the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction, citing that because the victim was wearing tight jeans, and had to help remove them, then it was consensual. The following day, women in the Italian Parliament wore jeans in protest of the high court’s decision.
Since 1999, when the group, Peace Over Violence, brought Denim Day to Los Angeles, the movement has spread across the United States, with over 20 states participating. In 2015, Italy participated in Denim Day for the first time, the website states.
The movement is also coming to college campuses, and gaining well-known sponsors, such as GUESS. For more information on Denim Day, visit the website, www.denimdayinfo.org. If you or someone you know is in an abusive situation of any kind, contact the Lewis County HOPE, Inc. office at 304-269-8233.
