MADISON (WKOW) — Volunteers in Madison helped turn old pairs of jeans into shoes for kids in need overseas on Sunday.
The group Sole Hope met at Cuna Mutual to cut up denim and send it to Uganda, where a cobbler will make shoes out of the materials.
The shoes will help people there dealing with infestations of jiggers. The bugs infect feet and can lay eggs, leading to other health problems.
Event organizers say this work is an easy way to help keep kids healthy.
“Most Americans have some pairs of jeans that either don’t fit them anymore or are worn out or have a hole, so it’s an easy thing to donate. We got hundreds of pairs of jeans donated,” said Joni Juergens, Co-Chair of Sole Hope.
Volunteers worked to cut up enough denim for 300 pairs of shoes. They also collected money to help pay the cobbler who makes them.
Sole Hope will also send 300 health kits to Uganda.
