10 Denim Trends to Know for Fall - Sourcing Journal

The catwalk always reveals where denim is heading. And for Fall/Winter 19-20, the direction appears to be colorful, light and creative, with designers adding new twists to classics.

From jewelry-like embellishments and bursts of color, to creating new reasons why consumers need to acquire another jean jacket, here’s a look at 10 denim runway trends to know for Fall/Winter 19-20.

Jean skirts

In line with the Western theme that has touched ready-to-wear and footwear this summer, designers are trading in jeans for midi-length denim skirts. Expect to see the calf-skimming styles belted and pleated, wrapped and secured with a row of buttons, or flowing with panels of varying shades of blue.

Color

Streaky acid washes add an instant nostalgic factor to color denim. The edgy aesthetic from the ’80s tones down sorbet shades of orange and yellow, while adding a new intensity to violet and red denim.

Embellishment

The return of ’90s bling is a slow-moving moving train. While trend forecasters have anticipated a comeback for the Paris Hilton-approved look, brands like Versace and Moschino have shown surprising restraint by placing shimmery appliques and scrolls of glitter on wearable designs like classic straight-cut jeans.

Light washes

Light or bright washes add an all-seasons functionality to denim. The washes are on trend for the crop of loose-fit jeans by designers Alex Mullins and MSGM. For a more commercial design, expect brands to enhance the color with fabrics that have a soft hand feel.

Zipper jackets

Sometimes all it takes is one detail to make something old feel new again. This season, it is the zipper jean jacket—a sporty and functional update to the classic button-down Trucker jacket that has blanketed the denim outerwear category for several seasons. Expect to see zips on denim bombers and moto-inspired jackets for both men and women.

Dye effects

Designers like GmbH and Liam Hodges are punching up their Fall/Winter 19-20 collections with unseasonal bursts of color in unexpected ways. And the dye effects—from traditional tie-dye to Pollock-inspired splatter—are adding a new level of intensity and depth to men’s and women’s fashion.

Deconstruction

Designers are moving beyond hybrid styles. This new phase of deconstruction brings with it open seams, inside-out constructions and jeans that literally peel away to reveal hidden layers. While the trend skews fashion, expect to see commercial brands play with tear-away silhouettes pulled from the activewear category, and high-low hems for drama.

Gray

While pure black is a mainstay in fall/winter collections, washed-down gray offers men and women an alternative to vintage blues. The color smacks of casual, laidback coolness and is an ideal companion for the merch shirts and vintage-looking tees hitting the market.

Prints

Logo mania has manifested into a new trend: printed denim. Luxury streetwear brands like Iceberg and Vetements are among the labels that applied laser techniques to denim this season to create all-over prints spanning deconstructed logos to bandana prints. Expect the message-driven trend to carry into T-shirts and sweaters.

Shine

Designers are combining liquid metallics with the coolness of denim and streetwear staples. Palm Angels dabbled in metallic coated denim with a pair of cropped jeans with a slight kick flare. Brazilian denim brand John John offered a range of blue and red foil Trucker jackets and skinny jeans, while boxy gold trucker jackets were part of Private Policy’s statement on wealth.
