Throwback photos stir up laughs, memories and—for denim heads—a wealth of vintage denim inspiration. This weekly column on Rivet asks individuals in the denim industry to take a look back and reminisce about a denim moment in time captured on film.
This week, Aydan Tüzün of Naveena Denim Mills talks about her experience at an Italian high school in Istanbul, and how it ended up being the connecting force between her and the denim world. Though she studied economics at Istanbul University, she found denim was her calling, after years of following Italian fashion with her classmates.
More than 20 years later, she’s still heavily invested in the industry as the executive director of global sales and marketing at Naveena Denim Mills.

This photo is from the second half of the ’80s—my high school years. Like many of us, it is one of the most beautiful periods of my life that I always cherish. Being in an Italian high school in Istanbul gave me the opportunity to follow Italian fashion closely. We were all denim lovers and it was always the main piece for each one of us. Fiorruci was the iconic brand for us at that time.
In the photo, I’m wearing denim on denim and playing the accordion, the symbolic instrument of my Balkan roots and the entertainment of my family gatherings at that time. As was the case back then, I wear denim for nearly every occasion today.
