Jessica Alba Talks New Denim Collab, What Makes the Perfect Jean ... - Hollywood Reporter

The actress/entrepreneur dished on her new collaboration with DL1961 during the Revolve Clothing launch party in West Hollywood.

At this point, Jessica Alba is more than the blockbuster superhero film star-turned-businesswoman — she’s also Jessica Alba the brand: A smart and business savvy entrepreneur with a passion for environmentally-friendly solutions, who also happens to be one of the most stylish women in L.A.

So it’s fitting that for her latest project, the 35-year-old teamed up with sustainable denim brand DL1961 for a 17-piece collection, available online at DL1961’s website and just launched on Revolve.com. The premium range, which includes skinnies, flares, a slouchy fit, leather pants and a denim flight suit, is priced between $178 and $878.

“It just goes along with who I am as a person,” she said of why she chose to add the collaboration with the family-owned DL1961 operation to her long list of projects, which not only includes the billion-dollar Honest Co. business (which recently added hair care to the repertoire of beauty, skincare and home products), but also her return to action flicks on the big screen.

“They are one of the only — if not the only — denim manufacturer that owns their own factories,” she said of the Pakistan-based company. “It’s a family owned business, and the father engineered a water filtration system so that not only do they use 50 percent less water in their process of making a lot of their denim, but they filter their water so it’s clean when it goes back into the system, which is very different for a denim brand. They’re paving the way for sustainability which I thought was awesome.”

Not to mention, the L.A. native, known for her relaxed, California Cool off-duty style, has been a longtime champion of the jeans and a tee look. “I feel like denim’s had a moment my whole life,” laughed Alba (who was clad in black skinnies and a tank topped with a silk bomber jacket) when asked about the recent resurgence of denim styles that aren’t just your typical blue straight-leg jean. It’s true, the actress is regularly spotted in the breezy style; even the employee uniform at Honest Beauty’s year-long pop-up at The Grove in L.A. was a chambray button down and dark denim.

That being said, she knows what's important in a good pair of premium jeans. "For your denim to not stretch over time, and actually hold its shape over time is really unique, and because [DL1961] owns their own IP and creates their own fabrications, they know how to do that."

Plenty of Alba's fellow So Cal style pioneers, including stylist-turned-designer Rachel Zoe and Who What Wear founders Hillary Kerr and Katherine Power (who launched their own Who What Wear for Target range earlier this year — apparently the design bug is contagious among the circle of friends) turned up at the Revolve Social Club on Friday evening to celebrate the collection's Revolve.com launch. Other guests included Alba's actress pals Reese Witherspoon, Jaime King and Busy Philipps.

The one unlikely occasion you won't find the actress in one of her new seven denim styles? This Halloween, for which Alba revealed she has two costumes lined up. "My daughter really wants me to go as Shimmer and Shine with her so I have to be a jeanie with blue hair," she said. But for the main event, Alba's get-up is a bit more fashionable — kind of. "This year we're going to go as Ab Fab," she said of her and pal Kelly Sawyer's annual BFF costumes, noting that she'll be dressing as Edina. "I get to be the crazy one. The absolute nut job."
